London, 1992. Late one night, Edward Crane, 76, is declared dead at a London hospital. An obituary describes him only as a ‘resourceful career diplomat’. But Crane was much more than that – and the circumstances surrounding his death are far from what they seem.

Fifteen years later, academic Sam Gaddis needs money. When a journalist friend asks for his help researching a possible sixth member of the notorious Trinity spy ring, Gaddis knows that she’s onto a story that could turn his fortunes around. But within hours the journalist is dead, apparently from a heart attack.

Taking over her investigation, Gaddis trails a man who claims to know the truth about Edward Crane. Europe still echoes with decades of deadly disinformation on both sides of the Iron Curtain. And as Gaddis follows a series of leads across the continent, he approaches a shocking revelation – one which will rock the foundations of politics from London to Moscow…

Summary:

I wasn’t expecting much on this book as I knew there would be a lot of history going on in there. The book starts of slow and boring. The first half was quiet confusing but it picks up slowly afterwards. Some of it was intense. I would give this book a 3 star rating though as I didn’t capture much of my attention to it. None the less, it’s a good read for history lovers.

Comment : I personally loved this book. With history and imagination flawlessly bound together the Cambridge 5 has now become part of my everyday thoughts. The Cold War is something I have little knowledge about and with this book, it has peaked my interest to uncover more knowledge about the history of one of the most infamous wars of espionage. Unlike yourself, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. 2 thumbs up!

I’m sad to say that this book wasn’t as gratifying as the other books I’ve read so far. All the conspiracy hidden in this book had me searching for clues which I’ve found absolutely none. The prologue was comprehensible and so was the epilogue. In the middle, however, it was quite hard for me to digest the meanings. Till now, the storyline of this book is still vague for me.

I was kind of disappointed when I read this book. I actually expected more from the book as the synopsis made it look very intriguing. Guess I was wrong. The plot in the book keeps on dragging and it is full of history, as if the author does not want us to find out about the murderer that soon. Some history lovers say that this book is the best they’ve read, but I beg to differ. The author could do better. Writing a very thick book doesn’t mean that the book is good. I hope he will produce better books in the future.

This is a splendid book. Most of us women do not tend to read books concerning conspiracy, but this book is really good. It takes knowledge for one to understand what is happening in this book, albeit, it’s much harder to comprehend the meaning behind what the characters are actually saying. 4 stars for this book!

This is a pretty average book. A bit dull, but exciting at times. I couldn’t really give it a bad rating or a good one, so I’ll just go with 3. It took me quite some times to understand the whole plot of the story. And I must say, there are plenty of words I do not comprehend since this is a new genre for me. But, I do enjoy learning new information. So, three stars it is for this book.
